WHAT IS A SINUS LIFT?
If you don’t have healthy bone density or enough room for an implant to be placed without touching your sinuses, a sinus lift may be necessary before getting a dental implant. At Corona Oral Surgery and Implant Center, we can prepare you to receive a dental implant with a sinus lift. Insufficient jawbone height, poor-quality bone, or sinuses that may be too near to put an implant are reasons why you may require a sinus lift, also referred to as sinus augmentation surgery. The sinus floor is lifted so that an implant can be properly placed. Schedule a consultation with one of our skilled board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Prabh Grewal and Dr. Arthur Kilkuts, at our practice in Corona, CA to learn more about sinus lift surgery and dental implants.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR A SINUS LIFT?
Candidates for a sinus lift include men and women who are generally in good health and don’t have any existing medical conditions that would make oral surgery a risk to their health. Typically, a sinus lift surgery is required when there isn’t enough space in the upper jaw to place dental implants. This can often be caused by having a larger than average sinus cavity or sinuses that are too near the jawbone. Having poor bone quality can also make you a candidate for sinus lift surgery.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GETTING A SINUS LIFT?
Here at Corona Oral Surgery and Implant Center, we encourage our patients to consider a sinus lift when necessary if they are interested in a range of benefits this procedure offers, including:
- Qualification for other maxillofacial procedures, such as dental implants
- Repair of shape and structure if bone loss from cancer or trauma is present
- Reposition or resize the sinuses
- Increase bone height if worn down by gum disease
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY SINUS LIFT?
You might need a sinus lift if you have limited room in the upper jaw for a dental implant because your sinuses are excessively large or too close to the jawbone. At your consultation, an x-ray will be needed to measure your sinuses and jaw to decide if moving the sinuses and/or a bone graft will be an appropriate course of action before an implant can be done. Sinus lift augmentation is a detailed surgical process that is performed in our office by one of our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons. If necessary, a bone graft will be prepped. A surgical incision will be made in the soft tissue in the back of your mouth. The gums will be lifted to show the bone. The bone graft, if needed, will be placed before the sinuses are pushed up higher and away from the jaw, then the incision within the gumline will be sutured. Following your sinus lift, you may be given a prescription for an antibiotic and pain reliever to help you during your recovery. Someone from our team will walk you through the best way to care for your incisions. You need to schedule a follow-up appointment about 1 – 2 weeks after your sinus surgery to remove the stitches. The bone graft will take several months to heal until a dental implant can be placed.
